Amnesty International, Switzerland:
Candles of Freedom
The word «freedom» is written in seven languages on the candles of Amnesty International. To remember that each human being is born free and equal in rights, the date of December 10th was chosen to honour the United Nations General Assembly's adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global enunciation of human rights. The commemoration was established in 1950, when the General Assembly invited all states and interested organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit. Many governmental and nongovernmental organizations active in the human rights field also schedule special events to commemorate the day. In Switzerland the main campaign of Amnesty International is to sell the Candle of Freedom. Initially developed for white and blue, later on, a bigger choice of colors has been created in seven colors. One version can be even found in natural bees wax.
